The Columbia Gorge, navigated more than 200 years ago by Lewis and Clark, is the crown jewel of the Pacific Northwest. The world’s greatest concentration of waterfalls plunge hundreds of feet in a captivating display of nature. Snowcapped peaks tower majestically above glacial lakes, lush forest, and fields of wildflowers.
For active travelers, the region surrounding the Gorge offers incredible opportunities to tour the region by bike and by foot. The area is also a photographic wonderland. To the south lies majestic and glaciated Mt. Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak. To the north, Washington’s Mt. Adams forms an equally impressive backdrop.
Ride along a bike path that Bicycling Magazine describes as a “must ride” in Portland, the city they named tops in the US for bicycling. Narrow winding roads, towering waterfalls and stunning vistas highlight rides along the Columbia River. A gorgeous two lane road provides stunning views of some of the most scenic aspects of the Gorge as it leads by an amazing array of spectacular waterfalls.
Visit a remote alpine lake fed by glaciers high on the flanks of Mt. Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak. A lovely hike features stunning views of this imposing peak as it looms across the lake. Go for a swim or paddle a canoe in the pristine water before cycling through orchards and rolling farmland into the Hood River Valley.
Cross the Columbia River into Washington to cycle lightly traveled roads through a wildlife reserve framed by Mt. Adams. Raft the White Salmon River, designated a Wild and Scenic River, on a professionally guided trip. Enjoy a glorious hike on the flanks of Mt. Adams. This huge, dormant volcano is surrounded by dense forests that are home to bear, lynx, elk and other wildlife. Near the timberline, cascading glacial streams and shimmering lakes are punctuated by fields of wildflowers, even into autumn.
A patchwork of orchards, vineyards and farms blanket the landscape in the valley between Mt. Hood and the Columbia River. The lively town of Hood River, on the banks of the Columbia, is a cultural hub for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. It is home to coffee houses, eclectic shops, restaurants, cafes and an early microbrew pioneer.
